The BJP attack came a day after Times Now cited an RTI response to report that Chidambaram had cleared the first affidavit.
The war of words between the BJP and Congress
over fresh developments in the Ishrat Jahan case escalated on Tuesday with the
ruling party alleging that Congress president Sonia Gandhi had asked then Home
Minister P Chidambaram to file a second affidavit in the case as the UPA could
“tolerate terrorists but not Narendra Modi as Prime Minister”.
The BJP attack came a day after Times Now
cited an RTI response to report that Chidambaram had cleared the first
affidavit.
At a press conference on February 29,
Chidambaram had said the first affidavit was filed without his approval. “As
minister, when it was brought to my notice that the first affidavit was
ambiguous — which was filed without my approval — and it was being
misinterpreted, it was my duty to correct the first affidavit. So we filed a
supplementary affidavit after consulting the home secretary, the director of
Intelligence Bureau and other officers,” he had said.
On Monday, Chidambaram issued a statement
saying that while he couldn’t comment without checking the files and notings,
“my public statements on why the second affidavit was filed, after due and full
consultation with the home secretary and the attorney general, are
self-explanatory”.
He said the “real issue is, even if a person
is suspected to be a terrorist, can that person be killed — as alleged — in a
fake encounter?”
Today, BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra asked
Chidambaram to name the “culprit” who had asked him to change the affidavit.
“Mr P Chidambaram, let the nation know. Who is she who wrote the conspiracy?
Because we all know that in the Congress party, diktats come from a singular
address. You know the address. The remote control lies with her,” he said at a
press conference. The remote control is at one place, which is 10, Janpath,
Patra said, referring to Sonia’s address.
He alleged that Sonia, then Prime Minister
Manmohan Singh and Chidambaram “suppressed” information provided by the NIA and
FBI about Ishrat being a terrorist and a threat to then Gujarat Chief Minister
Narendra Modi’s life.
The Congress hit back, accusing Modi and BJP
president Amit Shah of “shamelessly misleading” the country and “obstructing
judicial process by blocking trial of accused in the Ishrat Jahan fake
encounter case pending in the court at Ahmedabad.”
Congress
communication department head Randeep Singh Surjewala said: “The Modi
government is using a web of selective news leaks, deceptive statements of its
ministers and non-grant of sanction for prosecution of the accused to ensure
mistrial and re-investigation through pliable investigating agencies. The Prime
Minister and BJP president need to tell 125 crore Indians the real motive
behind the desperation to shut down trial in the Ishrat Jahan case. What is it
that they seek to hide, or are scared of, needs to be placed before the
nation.” Source: The Indian Express
