A huge fire engulfed one
of the premier schools of Shillong city, St. Peter’s Higher Secondary School in
the wee hours today.
According to preliminary
reports, the incident took place at around 4 am. Though a short circuit has
been alleged to be the reason, the angle of foul play has not been ruled out.
According to the nearby
residents, the fire was caused by a short circuit and then spread across the
old block of the school which is primarily a wooden structure. Gas cylinder
explosions added to the inferno.
Initial
reports suggest no casualties as most of the people staying in the school
escaped from the back entrance.
3 fire engines were
pressed into service but had difficulties reaching the inside of the building
because of the narrow lanes. The fire continued for almost an hour.
