Prime Minister Narendra Modi's graduation degree is authentic, the Delhi University said today after days of controversy over his educational qualifications.
"We have checked our records and it has been authenticated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's degree is authentic. He cleared the examination in 1978 and was awarded the degree in
1979," said the university's registrar Tarun Das after an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) delegation went to the
university seeking details of the degree.
Security personnel swarmed the university office as the AAP contingent, including Ashutosh, Ashish Khaitan and Sanjay Singh, arrived to meet Vice Chancellor Yogesh Tyagi.
They were told that he is busy, and they should come back on Wednesday.
"We want to meet the VC so that the truth comes out. They're telling us he's busy," said the party's Ashish Khetan.
"There is an atmosphere of fear here. If all is well with the degree then why don't they reveal details?" Sanjay Singh questioned.
AAP refused to back down on its campaign against the Prime Minister even after the ruling BJP yesterday released what it said were details of Mr Modi's degrees - a Bachelor of Arts from Delhi University and a Master of Arts in political science from Gujarat University.
Displaying the degrees to the media, BJP president Amit Shah said: "Arvind Kejriwal has been spreading lies about the Prime Minister. He has tried to defame the PM. He should apologise not only to the PM but the entire nation."
Arvind Kejriwal alleged that the BJP released "fake degrees" and had the real records at the university "sealed".
AAP says there are "glaring discrepancies" in the released documents, including different spellings of Mr Modi's name. The party also says the degree certificate is partly typed and part handwritten, which shows "manipulation".
"The name on mark-sheet is Narendra Kumar Damodar Das Modi, whereas on the degree it is Narendra Damodar Das Modi. Also the graduation marksheet shows 1977, the degree was issued in 1978. How is that possible?" Ashutosh said.
AAP insists that the only "Narendra Modi" who graduated from Delhi University in 1978 was not the prime minister but his namesake "Narendra Mahavir Modi" from Rajasthan's Alwar.
