West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday said she supports the Goods
and Services Tax (GST) Bill despite being politically opposed to the ruling BJP
at the Centre because it is a pro-people bill.
"We are fighting for the GST.
The reason we are fighting for it because it is one tax formulae, which will
work for the industry. There would be one tax in place, instead of ten taxes
and the work would be done," Mamata said in her address to the
industrialists.
"The people have been fed up
with so many taxes and that is why we think it is a positive tax
proposal," she added.
The TMC supremo further said that
her government is supporting the GST from 2009.
"With the implementation of
this system, our industry will get good results and that is why we are in
favour of this," she added.
Mamata also instructed West Bengal
Finance Minister Amit Mitra,
who is the chairman of the Empowered Committee of State Finance Ministers on GST,
to ensure the passage of the bill soon.
"I am politically opposed to
the BJP government. But it doesn't mean I
would block the passage for the pro- people bill," she added.
