Here’s a look-back at all the epic events that took place in Game of Thrones‘ 9th episodes

Game of Thrones season 6 episode 9, ‘Battle of the Bastards’ is upon us and nobody can wait for it to finally be Monday. The ninth episode of every Game of Thrones season has earned the viewers nothing but shock and terror, and the fact that the penultimate episode always marks a huge turn of events in the series makes it all the more important an episode. This tradition of having the climax in the ninth episode has worked in the favour of the show all these years, and considering the history of events that took place in these episodes, we can conclude that ‘Battle of the Bastards’ is going to involve just as much blood and gore and major plot twists.

Before we are graced with the ninth episode of season 6, let’s take a look at all the previous seasons’ penultimate episodes and what all they entailed.

Season 1: Baelor

Ned Stark’s beheading was the event that marked major changes. This was the first time we saw a beloved character die, and since then Game of Thrones has left us no hope of keeping faith in a favourite character since they might be killed any time soon. After this episode, there was some serious turn of events including Arya escaping King’s Landing, Robb capturing Jaime Lannister, Jon gaining possession of Longclaw- the Valyrian sword given to him by Lord Commander Mormont, and the death of Khal Drogo and his and Daenerys’s unborn son.

Season 2: Blackwater

This episode showed us Tyrion’s wildfire explosion, Stannis’s defeat, the Hound’s disappearance from the battlefield, and the Lannisters taking full control of King’s Landing. Tywin Lannister’s last-minute act of saving the city brought about remarkable changes in the show later on, and the episode itself was an impressive rendition of a battle and the glorious wildfire explosion.

Season 3: The Rains of Castamere

Robb, Talisa, and Catelyn Stark were slaughtered in the Red Wedding, before Arya could reach them, and if that wasn’t a heartbreaking moment then Greywind’s death was even worse. Further in the North, Jon revealed his true self to the Wildlings including Ygritte, for the first time Bran warged into Hodor, and Daenerys grabbed another city, that of Yunkai with the help of Daario Naharis.

Season 4: The Watchers on the Wall

The Night’s watch fought the Wildling army and Jon emerged as a loyal brother and leader of his army. Ygritte’s death through Olly marked the unveiling of Jon’s fate in the later seasons, enough to have him be betrayed by his own men in season 5 when he was killed, and now in season 6 his watch ended when he was brought back to life. The episode released major plot changes in the later seasons.

Season 5: The Dance of Dragons 

If Shireen being killed by her own father wasn’t shocking enough, we saw Daenerys being rescued from the fighting pits of Meereen by Drogon in this episode, which was the first time that Dany rode a dragon, while Tyrion and the others watched in nothing but utter bewilderment and awe. This, later on, conspired into serious events that took place in season 6 what with Dany being captured by the Dothraki.

Based on the kinds of things that have happened in the ninth episode of every season of Game of Thrones so far, we can assume that ‘Battle of the Bastards’ will mark major changes in the last episode as well as the upcoming season.
