'Peepli Live' Co-director Mahmood Farooqui Sentenced to 7 Years Of Jail for Rape

A Delhi court has sentenced seven years of imprisonment to Peepli Live co-director Mahmood Farooqui for raping a US researcher.

A student at the Columbia University in New York, the 35-year-old woman was raped by Farooqui at his Sukhdev Vihar residence in Delhi on March 28 in 2015.
Farooqui was convicted of rape on July 30. Additional Sessions Judge Sanjiv Jain reserved his order after the defence and prosecution concluded their arguments on the quantum of punishment.
The prosecution demanded maximum punishment, saying he had committed a grave offence.
The complainant's counsel also told the court that Farooqui must be awarded the maximum punishment as he had raped a foreign woman he had invited over for dinner and thus had "betrayed the friendship and trust of the woman".
The two were at a party and Farooqui had reportedly got drunk and taken her to a different room in the house and forced himself on her.
The woman met Farooqui in Varanasi where she had gone to collect information. Farooqui was helping her with her research work.
Farooqui directed the satirical Peepli Live with his wife, Anusha Rizvi. The film released in 2010 and was produced by Aamir Khan.
