Indo-Pak celebs mourn qawwal Ajmad Sabri's demise


Alia Bhatt, Ayushmann Khurrana, Amit Trivedi, Mahira Khan and Ali Zafar are among the celebrities from India and Pakistan to pay tribute to renowned qawwal Amjad Sabri, who was shot dead today.

The 45-year-old singer, of famed Sabri Brothers, was killed by unidentified motorcycle-borne gunmen today in Karachi, Pakistan.

"Amjhad sabri from sabri brothers qawwal group shot dead in Pakistan. One more brilliant artist has left us. RIP," tweeted "Udta Punjab" composer Trivedi.

"It's very unfortunate, heartbreaking and sad that something like this has happened to an artiste," actress Alia Bhatt told PTI.

Pakistani singer-songwriter Jimmy Khan wrote, "Shocked to hear about Amjad Sabri. What are we Pakistan? #RIPamjadsabri." 

Zafar said he was speechless by Ajmal's murder.

"No words. This is extremely sad, disturbing and unacceptable specially since he had submitted an application for his protection! #AmjadSabri," tweeted the singer-actor.

While actress Mahira Khan wrote, "Shocking!!" 

"Tragic. Sabri Bros took the qawwali to the west in the 70s. #RIP," wrote Khurrana.

Another Pakistani actress Sanam Baloch wrote, "Heart breaking Loss of another legend #AmjadSabri." 

Singer Hadiqa Kiani tweeted, "Just heard the news on #AmjadSabri, I am in a state of shock. A real legend. Praying for his family, praying for this country..." 

Amjad and an associate were travelling in a car in Karachi's Liquatabad 10 area when unidentified gunmen fired at their vehicle, critically injuring them.

The two were rushed to Abbasi Shaheed hospital, where Amjad succumbed to his injuries.

He was one of Pakistan's finest qawwals, known for his soul-stirring renditions of mystic poetry.
