On Friday, just as everyone was trying make sense of Brexit and its impact on the world, a message began doing the rounds. Only this one claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been declared best PM by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). It was circulating on many social media platforms including WhatsApp and Twitter.
While Modi supporters on social media went gaga over the announcement, none of them seemed to question the veracity of the message. So Twitter was flooded with messages congratulating PM Modi and also expressing pride in being an Indian.
Congratulations India, PM Modi has been declared as the best Prime Minister of World by UNESCO. 😊— I Support NaMo (@ISupportModiJi) June 24, 2016
UNESCO has declared Narendra Modi the best PM of the World. No matter your personal view about him, every Indian should be proud— Joy (@Joydas) June 23, 2016
Proud to notify all friends on Twitter that the PM Modi is declared as the best Prime Minister of World by UNESCO— Puran K Vig (@k_puran) June 23, 2016
But as it slowly became clear that the news was fake and had no truth to it, Twitterati then hit back:
In some parallel universe #UNESCO has just awarded PM Modi as the best camera spotter in the world, moment of proud for goumutra drinkers— Riya Mukherjee (@riyalovezu) June 25, 2016
Manikchand UNESCO best PM in supporting role award goes to...— dorku (@Dorkstar) June 25, 2016
UNESCO has not declared PM Modi as the *Best PM of the world*! UNESCO is not a 14 year old girl, and PM Modi is not its boyfriend. Geez— Vande Mataram (@UnSubtleDesi) June 23, 2016
